Isn’t spring the most exciting and intriguing time of year?

The one that makes our hearts wake up from a long winter dream and begin to beat in unison with awakening nature.

The one that fills our hearts with hope and sweet anticipation of something new that is about to come.

Something beautiful, fascinating, and certainly arousing our interest and enthusiasm for life.

It’s not surprising that in perfumery, there are so many creations dedicated to spring because scents like nothing else can reflect the renaissance of nature and the human soul.

Today I’ll review Villanelle and Sonnet 98 by Kamila Aubre, two interesting botanical perfumes entirely dedicated to spring around and inside us.

Villanelle.

Inspired by a spring villanelle, a poetic form with strict rules and frames, this perfume is an ode to the revival of nature that also has its rules, but nevertheless is full of freedom.

While many perfumes dedicated to spring are all about blooming flowers, Villanelle is the embodiment of damp earth, wet moss and bark after a spring thunderstorm.

This perfume opens with a refreshing and slightly sweet blend of herbal notes with bergamot and lavender that reminds the bracing coolness of the first spring days.

A floral accord featuring rose, jasmine, and violet is not so evident in this perfume, which cannot be said about the expressive duo of vetiver and frankincense that sounds quite loud from the very beginning.

Vetiver, with its multifaceted scent, in which woody, earthy, and smoky nuances blend into each other, creates the charming atmosphere of the forest after a spring rain.

The note of frankincense, for its part, perfectly complements vetiver and adds to Villanelle the profound balsamic sound with a touch of mystery.

Heavy raindrops run down the bark, damp earth emanates its intoxicating aroma, and everything around us awakes to take a deep breath of spring air.

Everything around, but inside?

Sonnet 98.

This perfume, in contrast to Villanelle, is a more intimate and thought-provoking story of love, loss, and spring, inspired by Shakespeare’s sonnet 98.

The contradiction between spring outside and prolonged winter inside is reflected by the blend of herbal, spicy, and floral notes on the evocative woody-balsamic background.

What stands out in this blend is the note of May Chang or Litsea cubeba that brings to Sonnet 98 its cheerful lemony sweetness.

The one you don’t expect to find in a perfume inspired by such beautifully melancholic poetry, but that certainly gives you hope for something better.

And even if the coldest winter is inside you now, the day will come when the most beautiful flowers will bloom there, and love will fill your heart again.

It may happen tomorrow or later.

It may happen this spring or next.

But it will definitely happen at the right time and in the right place.
