This year is definitely full of perfume releases. I have already told you about new Zoologist perfume Chameleon, dedicated to to the island Madagascar and its unique inhabitants.

Today I would like to invite you to explore one more paradise island called Mauritius. This island is also famous for its inhabitants, but unfortunately already not existing inhabitants…

And if you are intrigued, continue reading this post, because today I review Dodo Zoologist Perfumes, another new fragrance by this brand, created by perfumer Joseph DeLapp.

On A Paradise Island

The dodo is an extinct flightless bird that used to live on the island Mauritius until the end of the 17th century. These birds had a perfect relaxing life full of fruits and without enemies, but one century before, the sailors started to come to the island and to hunt the dodo.

The birds were not afraid of people and it was their fatal mistake…The dodo became dinner for the sailors who even had the game of who would kill more birds, while 2-3 birds could provide meat for a whole crew of the ship.

Those dodos, who survived the destruction by sailors, were haunted by the invasive species (dogs and pigs), while their habitat was being destroyed.

Nowadays, you can see the image of the dodo on the emblem of Mauritius. This unique bird is also one of the characters in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. According to the author, the dodo is a caricature of himself.

The tragic story of the dodo couldn’t have left indifferent the founder of Zoologist Perfumes Victor Wong. And earlier this year, a perfume dedicated to the dodo has been launched.

Fragrance Review of Dodo Zoologist Perfumes

This perfume is an embodiment of the paradise island Mauritius with its beautiful nature. It opens with the refreshing mix of citrus and fruity notes on the deep musky-woody background.

The opening of Dodo also consists of the note of fern, which together with the oakmoss in the base define the main character of this perfume – a modern fougere.

The heart of Dodo Zoologist is represented by the duo of rose and geranium notes which bring to this perfume their soft and alluring floral scent.

In turn, the note of ambergris adds to this fragrance its sensual aroma with some salty nuances, while the note of fir balsam gives Dodo its refreshing depth.

And if the top and middle notes of this perfume are mostly about the nature of Mauritius, then the base is definitely about the dodo itself. All notes mentioned above are framed by a powerful and expressive musky-woody accord.

The note of feathery musk gives this perfume its evocative animalic scent that you can notice from the first seconds. In turn, the note of oakmoss brings to this fragrance the refreshing and damp earthy scent, that is perfectly complemented by the note of patchouli.

Meanwhile, the note of sandalwood makes the scent of Dodo a little bit creamy and brings some light balsamic nuances.

Dodo Zoologist is more than just the interesting and unique perfume. It is a reminder of what we, human, can do to our nature, and how we destroy something that we can’t create or recreate.

It seems that this perfume even has some notes that have not been declared. The notes of emptiness and disappointment…

Of course, it is only my imagination and we have to believe in a better future, but definitely without forgetting the past.

Notes: Fern, Lime, Lychee, Raspberry, Ambergris, Fir Balsam, Geranium, Rose, Amber, Feathery Musk, Oakmoss, Patchouli, Sandalwood.

If it were a place, it would be a desert island.

If it were a color, it would be soft gray with pale green.

If it were one would, it would be devastated.
